Will Gollop’s Peugeot 306 (1993-1997)

G-Tech started working on the new Peugeot 306 in October 1993, the 306 followed the techniques and practices used in building last years 309 although the new car featured a composite floor and Safety Devices designed multi-point roll cage which was lighter and much stiffer. Double wishbone, fully independent suspension is used both front and rear. At the back this mounted onto a G-Tech fabricated sub assembly as opposed to the 205 T16 item used in last years 309, front suspension sub frame was built in-house and provides mountings for the engine and gearbox.

Gollop’s Peugeot 309 T16 car replaced his European Rallycross Championship winning MG Metro 6R4 BiTurbo. The Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 was designed to win World Rally Championships (and it did). The T-16 derived technology was bolted to Gollop’s 309. When European Rallycross Will Gollop announced that he would be driving a Peugeot in 1993 there were knowing nods of approval from the rallycross fraternity. The 205T16 E2 had won four titles from 1987 to 1990. However, there were questions over Gollop’s choice when details of the package that would make up his Silkolene Peugeot 309T16 ‘Supercar’ were released.

His SAAB 99 raced in 1977 came to him care of a violent accident, writing it off for road use, smashing a front wing, the opposite rear wing and bending the roof where it had rolled. 1994 European Rallycross Championship

The 1994 championship was characterised by intense competition between Hansen (winner of the first two rounds); 1993 champion Jean-Luc Pailler (winner of the next two rounds) and Martin Schanche, who claimed the first of three victories in round five at Croft in June. That win came as a huge relief to the Norwegian as he had put his Escort on pole position in each of the previous two races and twice had been foiled by Pailler. At Croft too, the Frenchman led until a controversial clash i the second corner left the Citroen on its rook and Martin the winner from the restart.

1993 Rallycross Review

The 1992 European Champion, Will Gollop, debuted his new Peugeot 309 and has had mixed results, having experienced teething and engine problems. Pat Doran was runner-up in the European Championship last year, the big man from Milstead has suffered more bad luck than anyone else this year but still managed to come through as the top British Division Two driver with 8th in the European Championship. 1993 – A New Era in the European Rallycross Championship

1993 Was a new era in rallycross, it sadly marked the end of the redundant Group B rally cars in international competition and the arrival of the Group A specials. With the arrival of the new cars came the inevitable teething problems experienced by most debuting a new car. From the Ford RS200, appeared a flurry of Escort Cosworths and the chunky Metro 6R4 were reborn as the desirable Nissan Sunny GTi-R.
