1994 European Rallycross Championship

The 1994 championship was characterised by intense competition between Hansen (winner of the first two rounds); 1993 champion Jean-Luc Pailler (winner of the next two rounds) and Martin Schanche, who claimed the first of three victories in round five at Croft in June. That win came as a huge relief to the Norwegian as he had put his Escort on pole position in each of the previous two races and twice had been foiled by Pailler. At Croft too, the Frenchman led until a controversial clash i the second corner left the Citroen on its rook and Martin the winner from the restart.

Pat Doran was runner-up in the European Championship last year, the big man from Milstead has suffered more bad luck than anyone else this year but still managed to come through as the top British Division Two driver with 8th in the European Championship. Finally, it’s all credit to one of the youngest drivers, Richard Hutton, who competed his first season in Europe and finished an outstanding 3rd overall in Division One.

25 Years of Rallycross

As long as enthusiasts enthuse there will always be prolonged debate on the birth of rallycross. Opinion is divided about the first rallycross meeting; some say it took place at Brands Hatch in 1963, others that Lydden was the venue in 1967. The Brands Hatch event was conceived to help the BBC TV Grandstand production team, a one-off meeting designed to fill the void caused by the cancellation of numerous horse racing events because of heavy snow and reoccurring sharp frosts.
