887496_280814-guild-aGuild of Motoring Writers members Richard Netherwood and Malcolm McKay have played a key role in the production of author Les Brown’s newly-launched title Rochdale, Sports Car Pioneers. Five years of intensive research by the author have finally uncovered the full story of this fascinating Lancashire based company, detailing the early years of development right through to the ground breaking Richard Parker designed models including the Olympic - still the only one-piece monocoque shell to reach successful production. Rochdale Owners Club Secretary Brown called on fellow club member and Rochdale aficionado McKay’s help, “Malcolm’s help with the proof reading and research of obscure information was invaluable and helped me considerably.” explains Brown. Guild Committee member Richard Netherwood’s involvement in the project came via a chance meeting, he explained. “From the moment I saw the original manuscript I knew this fascinating story needed to be told, so I offered to mentor Les through the whole production process and, it has to be said, he’s pulled out all the stops to do this – a fantastic effort.” 887499_280814-guild-bFormer Top Gear presenter and motoring journalist, Steve Berry interviewed Les Brown at last year’s Manchester Classic Car Show. “Steve and I are both Lancashire lads and hit it off straight away,” recalls Rochdale-born Brown, “so I asked him if he’d write the foreword. I was chuffed to bits when he said yes!” Berry comments “I think the Rochdale is both a very British car and a very Rochdale car… especially the unashamedly modern, great-looking Olympic which embodies the Spirit of ’59 just as well as Issigonis’s Mini or Triumph’s sexy superbike, the Bonneville” Hardbacked with 240 pages and 366 images covering all aspects of development, construction and competition history, the book represents incredibly good value at £30.00 plus £5.00 postage. Limited to 350 copies the books can be signed on request and are available directly from Kirkdale Press, Kirkdale, Wetherby Road, Bardsey Leeds LS17 9BB.
