Not seen on the market for more than 40 years, the 1935 Mercedes-Benz 500K Cabriolet A was delivered new to Parisian actor, Henri Garat at his hotel in Berlin and will feature at the Grand Palais auction as part of Retromobile Week in Paris on 6 February 2014. Henri Garat, who was born in Paris in 1902, starred in many a hit film during the 1930s, including American musical Adorable, with Janet Gaynor. Having been kept in a private Swiss collection since 1969, the 500K cabriolet A, considered by many as the most desirable version produced, is one of just 33 of this type built and is estimated at between €2m and €2.5m. In addition to Garat’s eight cylinder supercharged grand tourer, a 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster with factory hardtop will also feature at the auction.

The roadster has been kept in the same private ownership as the 500K since 1972 and carries an estimate of between €650,000 and €850,000. Philip Kantor, Bonhams head of department for Motor Cars Europe, said: “These two desirable Mercedes-Benz from long term private ownership are fresh to the market and we are convinced they will become stars in their own right at the auction.”Tags:, ,
