Ford Capris and Escorts, Jaguar XJS and Triumph Dolomite Sprints, BMW 2002 and Datsun 240Z: There's something about Touring Cars from the late 1960s to early 1980s that brings back memories not just of the racing but of the road-going saloon cars that many of us longed to own. To offer spectators the widest possible range of these nostalgic classics doing battle at Donington, Motor Racing Legends' HTCC (Historic Touring Car Championship) sponsored by JD Classics has joined forces with the 1970s Celebration run by Masters...and the result has brought some unexpected treats.

Take the 1984 MG Metro Turbo. Not necessarily a model that would be top of your dream car list perhaps, but the blue and white Metro Turbo to be piloted by Patrick Watts who drove it in period in the British Touring Car Championship  might change your mind. This is the first time that the car, still in its original Computervision livery, has been back on track in Patrick's hands since its 1980s heyday. The Metro will be mixing it with the likes of Sean and Robert Brown in their Ford Escort Mk1 RS, and the always quick TWR XJS of Alex Buncombe and Gary Pearson  plus two Dolomite Sprints, one of them, John Edwards' ex-Gerry Marshall example, class-winner in the 1979 Production Saloon Car Championship. For even more variety, while the HTCC is strictly for Touring Cars from 1966-85, the Masters '70s Celebration grid brings some GTs to the party, such as 911 RSR and Carrera RS Porsche plus a Ferrari 308.

The HTCC and '70s Celebration grid will be out on track on Friday (qualifying) and Saturday (a 45 minute race from 11:30). And if you enjoy the spectacle so much that you're left wanting more, the combined grid will be out again on the Brands Hatch GP circuit on 25-27th May. 2013 Donington Historic Festival HTCC 1966-85 Touring Cars GalleryTags:
