HSCC ready for Wolds Trophy meetingThe Wolds Trophy meeting at Cadwell Park (20/21 April) is the next date on the calendar for the Historic Sports Car Club and once again a bumper entry of more than 200 cars will assemble at the fabulous Lincolnshire venue. With 22 races across the weekend, there will be over 12 hours of racing from double-headers for 10 categories. As has become the tradition for the event, Formula 3 will feature prominently and the programme includes the opening races of the season for Classic F3 (1600cc and 2-litre cars of the 1970s) and Historic F3 for the 1-litre cars from the late 1960s. For the Historic F3 cars, the Justin Haler Trophy will be run across two races for over 20 of the fabulous 1-litre cars. As well as overseas racers like Brabham BT28-mounted Klaus Bergs and Leif Bosson, local front-runners will include Dan Forward (Brabham BT21B), Simon Armer (March 703) and Stuart Tizzard (Chevron B15C). Meanwhile, Frenchman Rene Ligonnet is back with the Chevron B15 he has owned since it was new more than 40 years ago. Moving on a generation are the Classic F3 cars and a quality field includes the category debut of Graham Fennymore (Ralt RT3) and Richard Dutton (March 783). Fennymore has the ex-Martin Brundle car and will be very quick, while Dutton was a rising single-seater star over 30 years ago before carving a career as a very successful race team owner. Former champions Benn Simms (March 803B) and Jamie Brashaw (March 793) are the category benchmarks along with David Shaw in the ex-Nelson Piquet Ralt RT1. More strong single-seater grids will represent Formula Ford, with a capacity entry for round three of the Historic Formula Ford Championship. Simms switches to his Jomo JMR7 to take on drivers like David Wild (Lola T200) and Stuart Baird (Merlyn Mk11A). In the Formula Ford 2000 races, defending champion Nelson Rowe (Reynard SF79) can expect another fierce challenge from category newcomer Callum Grant (Delta T78). A round of the Millers Oils Historic Formula Junior Championship for the Barry Westmoreland Trophy and round three of the Classic Racing Car Championship will wrap up the single-seater action. Once again, an entry of more than 30 cars for the ByBox Historic Touring Car Championship has dictated two grids, split at 1300cc, so the smaller-engined cars have their own races. The Imps of Andy Jones and David Heale will take on the Mini Cooper of Donington Park winner Peter Morgan. In the over 1300cc field, the Ford Mustangs of Richard Dutton and Warren Briggs and the Ford Falcon of Mike Gardiner will try and contain the Lotus Cortinas of Tim Davies, Neil Brown and Steve Shuttleworth. Races for the Road Sports categories will be as well supported as ever, with drivers like Julian Barter (TVR 3000M) and Oliver Ford (Lotus Europa) heading the 70s Road Sports field. In Historic Road Sports, for the cars from the 1960s, the Lotus Elans of Peter Shaw, Roger Waite and Jim Grant will excel at the challenging Lincolnshire track. Finally, a guest appearance for the Classic Clubmans category has attracted a good field of the front-engined sports-racing cars from up to 1980. Ray Mallock, son of Arthur, the founder of the Mallock dynasty, heads the entry in his Mallock Mk18B and it is a field of remarkable experience. David Childs and Malcolm Jackson join Mallock in having a history in the formula dating back to the 1960s, while Mike Lane, Barry Webb and John Harrison have all been racing these cars since the 1970s. However, it is relatively recent convert Mark Charteris who is the man to beat in his Mallock Mk20/21. On Saturday qualifying starts at 9am with the first of nine races at 13.00. On Sunday qualifying starts at 9am with the first of 13 races at 10.20. For more details about the HSCC, please visit www.hscc.org.ukTags:,
