Scott Moran, current championship leader

Three times former champion Scott Moran heads for Shelsley Walsh this weekend (1st/2nd June) 14 points ahead of his closest rival - his father - and 16 points ahead of reigning British champion Trevor Willis, when the Avon Tyres MSA British Hill Climb Championships visits the historic Worcestershire venue for its 'Best of British' weekend. Scott shares his Gould GR61X racing car with his father Roger, himself champion in 1997, and won both run-offs in rounds seven and eight at Gurston Down over the weekend to extend his lead in the championship, with Scottish driver Wallace Menzies in the DJ Firestorm moving into third place, followed by Trevor Willis and then Will Hall in his V6 Force. An interesting 'first' for Shelsley Walsh will be the appearance of Paul Haimes in his brand new turbo-charged Gould GR59 which is powered by a Hayabusa motorcycle engine and which gained championship points on its debut at the weekend. Around a dozen iconic Italian cars will be competing in the Pirelli Ferrari Championship and the weekend also hosts rounds of the TTC Group sponsored Midland and Leaders Championships which will see closely fought battles between a wide range of sports, saloons and racing cars. Current Midland Hill Climb Champion Mike Turpin, of Hereford, will continue the defence of his title in his supercharged Vauxhall VX220 but may well come under pressure from Henley-in-Arden driver Michael Harriman in his turbocharged Audi Quattro Sport. Interestingly titled machines, GN Spider, BHD Special, Fairley Mercury, Spectre Mk 7 and Nutsan Muffin will be competing in a separate class for Shelsley Specials, which have set handicap target times for the 1,000 yard track. Another special class will be for Chevron cars, with local man Peter Cox being seeded highest in his immaculate Chevron B42 and other famous names including Lotus, McLaren, Brabham, Lola, March, Cooper and Pilbeam will feature in the pre 1971 and 1985 sports and racing car classes. The single seater racing cars form a very large entry with 19 cars in the very competitive 1100 class, a dozen in each of the 1600 and 2000 classes and no fewer than eight of the UK's current top ten drivers will be competing in the unlimited class. Adding yet a further touch of variety will be the appearance of Bowler with their EXR S 4WD Rally Raid vehicles, complete with their special support truck, and it is hoped the outrageous Land Rover based machines will take to the hill on Sunday. The action starts at 9.15am each day with practice and qualifying on Saturday and timed competition runs on Sunday, with two separate 'run-offs' at the end of the morning and afternoon sessions for the 12 fastest cars competing for British Championship points.Tags:,
