VW DerbyThe Derby was launched in the UK in 1978, a two-door ‘notchback’ which slotted between the Polo and Golf to offer space for five passengers and luggage. Three petrol engines were available – 0.9-litre, 1.1-litre and 1.3-litre capacities producing 40, 50 and 60 bhp respectively.  With front-wheel-drive and a transversely mounted engine, the Derby was designed to give maximum space. The model was facelifted in 1979 with new bumpers and dashboard, and then relaunched in 1982 with, as the launch press pack states ‘more striking styling and an air of greater self-confidence’, as the Polo Classic in the UK. This remained on sale until 1992.  In total 57,781 Derby and Polo Classic models were sold in the UK.Tags:
