1994 British Rallycross Championship

For the British Rallycross Championship, 1994 was a year of change. Not only was it taken under the wing of the BRSCC, it also brought together direct competition between the European Rallycross Championship-legal supercars and the redundant Group B rally cars. Finally it produced the first ever winner from outside the UK in Irishman Dermot […]

1993 Rallycross Review

Three British drivers have had a tough year in Europe in 1993. The 1992 European Champion, Will Gollop, debuted his new Peugeot 309 and has had mixed results, having experienced teething and engine problems. Pat Doran was runner-up in the European Championship last year, the big man from Milstead has suffered more bad luck than anyone else this year but still managed to come through as the top British Division Two driver with 8th in the European Championship. Finally, it’s all credit to one of the youngest drivers, Richard Hutton, who competed his first season in Europe and finished an outstanding 3rd overall in Division One.

1993 – A New Era in the European Rallycross Championship

1993 Was a new era in rallycross, it sadly marked the end of the redundant Group B rally cars in international competition and the arrival of the Group A specials. With the arrival of the new cars came the inevitable teething problems experienced by most debuting a new car. From the Ford RS200, appeared a flurry of Escort Cosworths and the chunky Metro 6R4 were reborn as the desirable Nissan Sunny GTi-R.

25 Years of Rallycross

As long as enthusiasts enthuse there will always be prolonged debate on the birth of rallycross. Opinion is divided about the first rallycross meeting; some say it took place at Brands Hatch in 1963, others that Lydden was the venue in 1967. The Brands Hatch event was conceived to help the BBC TV Grandstand production team, a one-off meeting designed to fill the void caused by the cancellation of numerous horse racing events because of heavy snow and reoccurring sharp frosts.

1991 FIA European Rallycross Championship

In the absence of reigning champion Matti Alamaki the rallycross pundits, particularly the Norwegians, tipped Martin Schanche for this year’s FIA European title. But no one told Will Gollop it was supposed to be a one-horse race and the British driver gave chase to the hot favourite with great style.

1991 RAC British Rallycross Championship

Remodelled and revitalised for 1991, the leaner, meaner RAC MSA British Rallycross Championship revived the competitive sprint. Defending champion Steve Palmer fought hard for his crown but it was to be Will Gollop’s year.

1991 Brands Hatch Rallycross Grand Prix Challengers…

The man who must start the event as favourite, Gollop has this year clinched his first ever outright British Championship and fought long and hard against Martin Schanch in the European series too. The letter series of course ended with his big crash at Lydden and the G-Tech team worked hard rebuilding its charger into a spare body shell. In the process Will took the opportunity to make some improvements to the handling.

1991 British Rallycross Grand Prix Preview

It’s difficult to believe that it is ten years since Rolf Nilsson emerged through the mist and rain to win the first British Rallycross Grand Prix. Difficult too, to believe the pace of technological development within rallycross during those ten years, the two wheel driven Porsche that Nilsson used to win with a decade ago may well struggle to match the fastest of the drivers in the 1991 Brands Hatch British Rallycross Grand Prix. However, ten years on, with Autoglass taking over the sponsorship and the cars going faster than ever.

Pat Doran Interview

For many years an ardent rally driver, Pat Doran suddenly switched to rallycross two years ago. In the beginning he made a bit of a name for himself as something of a wild man and someone to avoid at all costs. The midway through 1991 something radical happened and the driver from Walderslade became a respected member of the rallycross community and, moreover, a driver not only to watch, but beat.
